Microsoft was looking to innovate around novel technologies

Much of Microsoft's innovation is inspired by the realm of computing but Microsoft also values the inspiration that comes from people's behaviour and people's use of technology. Instrata carries out studies with a broad scope such as how people use the web in the workplace and how people manage information. Studies may take place in an office environment or more complex environments, such as a high tech physics laboratory. The purpose is to identify opportunities for new technologies and to patent ideas. Instrata also helps shape and design the development of prototypes from a user-centred perspective. We evaluate their use to understand and identify their impact.
